Review:
My Raining Stars is a project spearheaded by Thierry Haliniak, a French musician who has been active since the early '90s, when he played in a band called Nothing to Be Done. His self-recorded, self-issued 2008 debut sounded somewhere in between jangly indie pop and the later end of Britpop. He continued recording demos throughout the 2010s, and he began working with Casper Iskov, who helped flesh out My Raining Stars' sound with live drums, more guitars, and more detailed mixing. Momentum is My Raining Stars' second album with Iskov, and there's clearly a heavier presence of noisy guitars here, pointing the group's sound closer to the direction of shoegaze. They're still an indie pop group at their core, though, and they never let their songs get swallowed up by swirling effects and reverb. Opener "For Good" sounds like it was written during the period right before Britpop dissolved and more traditional-sounding rock bands like the Stereophonics became popular. "Better Life" sounds closer to the early-'90s baggy scene, with slower drum machines and an easygoing bass groove bringing to mind any number of bands that sprung up following the first Stone Roses album. "Special Place" takes on a more romantic tone, with heart-on-sleeve lyrics and backing vocal harmonies recalling rock music's simpler early days. Even with its gale of shoegaze guitars, "Stop the Time" continues with this sentiment, as Haliniak confesses, "I love you more than words can say." "The Cost Within" is a more jangly, summery high point, but some of the following tracks reflect a deep fall into depression, with the lyrics of "Void" being quite harrowing.
